The Seed of Faith
May 7, 2020 by Vicki Williams

Many years ago, a very dear aunt of mine gave me a necklace with a mustard seed in it.  She wrote me a note telling me how she had seen my faith grow as I went through the trials and challenges of life, and she wanted this necklace to remind me to keep leaning on my faith no matter what the future might hold.  Every time I would take that necklace out of my jewelry box to wear it, I would think of her words.

In Matthew 17:10, Jesus said to His disciples:  “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, “Move from here to there, and it would move.  Nothing would be impossible.”

Jesus used the example of a mustard seed because of its incredible growth potential. A mustard seed is only one to two millimeters in size when it’s planted, yet when it is fully grown, it can be as much as 20 feet wide and 20 feet tall.  In optimal conditions, it can reach up to 30 feet tall!

Just like that mustard seed, our faith has the potential to grow from a tiny seed to full maturity!  We have all faced things in life that we didn’t think we could get through.  It’s in those times that we might question if our faith is big enough, or if our faith is strong enough, or if our faith is anything enough to get us through.

But, you can be assured that it IS enough!

It’s by leaning on Jesus through the unknown, uncertain, and even scary times of life that the mustard seed takes root and starts to grow, and it’s by spending time with Him that our faith is watered and we become stronger and start to bloom.

Have you ever really thought about the strength of a seed?

Seeds are determined little things!  Left to themselves, they are small and seemingly insignificant. However, once they are planted and watered, they become strong enough to break through the heavy, dark soil around them as they put down roots.  They can even grow around rocks and move them if they’re in the way!

It’s much the same with us and our faith.  We may feel insignificant and compare ourselves to someone whose faith seems much bigger.  We may face times of doubt and only see the darkness.  We might question if we’re strong enough to get past the obstacles in front of us.

When these times come, remember the mustard seed.  Remember its tiny beginning, its resilience and determination, and its potential.  Our faith is made to grow!!

Stay rooted in Jesus.

Grow deep in His Word.

It’s my prayer that as you lean on Jesus, your faith will grow like a mustard seed!
