Who am I?

The American life has become one of running around, being busy, accomplishing things, making lists, never taking time to stop. Now suddenly, all of that has come to a screeching halt.

Who are we without the busyness we’ve built around ourselves? There are well known times in life when people have had to struggle to discover who they are and where their value lies;  peer pressure in teen years, times of isolation, children leaving the nest, debilitating medical issues, and retirement are a few. Right now society as a whole is being forced to question this together…and figure it out together.

In this unprecedented pause in life, we have an amazing opportunity to learn how to find our value in Jesus. This new isolation is creating moments for us to finally, finally take a breath and get to know our Creator, the one who values us most. He’s been waiting to tell us for so long but we’ve been too busy running the rat race to actually listen and learn to feel his great love.

We now have moments to wrestle with our deep-down self that thinks busyness equals worthiness. We have the time to discover a new relationship with Jesus and his overwhelming, radical, outrageous love. We can learn to be content. Can you even imagine how this would impact the rest of our lives? In future moments of loneliness and abandonment and pain….we would have this KNOWING that we are His everything.

We can enjoy our jobs, enjoy our friends, enjoy our successes and accomplishments, but our value is not found in them. We are just as valuable when we are alone …and feeling lonely. Even if you are one that is still very busy with work, you are probably still more alone or much more at home. It affects us all. Whether you are in the midst of either desperate loneliness, overwhelming childcare overload, boredom, trying to work from home…things are incredibly different.

When the anxiety of the differentness creeps upon you, realize that you are held and loved and cherished. Your value comes from God. Your hope is in the Lord, and he loves you desperately.

Read Psalm 121 today. It says it all.

I will lift up my eyes to the hills,
from where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who guards Israel
shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your guardian;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not harm you during the day,
nor the moon during the night.
The Lord shall protect you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
from now and forevermore.

Then be still and know.
